Slacker Radio Plus {Review & Giveaway}

8.01.2009 89 comments

For the past few weeks, I have been listening to and comparing Slacker Radio Plus to my other internet radio experiences. I have been weighing out the pros and cons to share with you all. As hard as it has been to come up with "cons", here is what I have gathered.

WHAT I LIKE ABOUT SLACKER RADIO...

- I feel that the suggestions to similar artists you like is more relevant than most internet radio sites.
- I LOVE the lack of ads and commercials and having the freedom to skip as many songs as I'd like.
- I really like having the lyrics available for the song while it is playing, without having to Google it.
- Slacker Radio has artists that other internet radios do not have and vice versa.
- Slacker Radio doesn't censor any music. I don't want to hear bleeps or lyrics that don't make any sense in the music I listen to.
- Slacker is available to me even when I am not at my computer via Blackberry, select Sony Bravia televisions and Slacker's very own portable radio (an electronic device which looks like an mp3 player and can fit in your pocket) which I can listen to while doing anything.
- I have the freedom to listen to any genre I want at the click of a button.
- It may sound silly but I am more likely to go to Slacker to listen to music because an easier URL to remember, simply slacker.com.
- I prefer it to satellite radio, obviously, because I am the DJ.
- The site HAS actually introduced to bands I have not heard of and that has got to be the best thing about it, for me.

Some of my favorite stations have been:

- Flight of the Conchords
- Kimya Dawson
- Tim Fite
- Get Set Go
- They Might Be Giants

WHAT COULD USE IMPROVEMENT?

- There are a few artists that haven't made their way to Slacker yet. Some that I was looking for but couldn't find were Terra Naomi, Shuyler Fisk and Wonderful Smith. Those are just artists I really wanted to hear but weren't available. All mainstream artists were incredibly easy to find and Slacker does even have a huge selection of artists that are not very well-known, but there were not a part of it.
- I wish there were a button where I could mesh all of my stations together for a random listening session, like on other internet radio stations.
- There was only one station I didn't like and it was because they associated the group as being more mainstream country, but they are actually like "Alternative Folk Pop" or something...and that was The Wreckers station.

Maybe I am blind but I can't see if Canadians can enter this one - can't see why not.
My daughter loves finding new indie bands so for her it would be Indie Chill.

Do they even have a classical station on there? Well, that'd be my choice if they do, but I would probably listed to alternative music too. Really, I'm ok with anything but rap and hip hop stuff.

I find that if you create a station you can get a whole mess of different artist...I listen to the free version and have created a pretty good station. Would love to have the subscription. My station is Whatever Happens, but I listen to Cracker Radio and that is pretty good.

I would probably have to go with the Indie Chill as my favorite/default station -- I'm guessing a lot of my favorite bands (Keane, Doves, Magnet, Death Cab for Cutie) will be represented. I also am a Flight of the Conchords fanatic, but I'd probably be more inclined to listen to their station for a change rather than as the default. :) Thanks for another awesome giveaway!
